The Southern Pacific Railroad began in 1865 to create a rail line from San Francisco to San Diego, and was soon purchased by the Big Four group of railroad tycoons responsible for the western part of the first transcontinental railroad. Once merged with the Central Pacific, the railroad grew into one of the largest in the Western United States. The Union Pacific was originally formed in 1862 by an act of Congress to construct a railroad from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean. It continued to expand and evolve, until it became one of the largest railroads in the west.In 1998, shortly after this photo was taken in San Luis Obispo, the two railroads merged and took on the Union Pacific name.
