Suitable for both shady and sunny gardens, Nolina texana (Texas Sacahuista) is a very ornamental evergreen perennial forming a thick mound of grass-like foliage. Up to 4 ft. long (120 cm), the strong, smooth, dark green leaves have been used in basket making. In spring and early summer, dense vertical clusters, 18 in. long (45 cm), packed with pinkish cream-colored blooms are borne atop short stems. They do not rise above the foliage and are almost hidden within the leaves. They attract butterflies and are followed by 3-lobed fruits. Slow-growing but low maintenance, heat, cold and drought tolerant, Texas Sacahuista is a graceful, evergreen garden accent that complements almost any other plant and provides texture and structure in winter.
