Green Globe Artichoke

A staple of Mediterranean cuisine. Grows best with a long, mild growing season, but can grow as an annual in cooler regions. Colorful flower buds appear year round in warm climates. Cut back to the ground after it has flowered to encourage regrowth.

Group 3 seeds every 6 inches. Start seeds indoors 12 weeks before your average last spring frost date. After 4 weeks transplant outside. Protect seedlings from frost. Harvest buds while they are closed. After initial harvest, side shoots will produce delicious smaller bonus buds. Harvest: 5 months

Mary Washington Asparagus

A perennial vegetable, plant them once and enjoy these delicious spears season after season. Initial cuttings will be ready in two years, and then annually after. Asparagus is worth waiting for. Healthy and succulent, grill or freeze to save your harvest!

Start indoors 8-12 weeks and keep moist. Seedlings emerge in 10-14 days. Alternately, direct sow in the spring when soil is 60° or warmer. Harden off and move outside to a bed that will not be disturbed when seedlings are 6-10 inches tall. Do not harvest the first year. Wait until late fall to cut tops for the following years regrowth. Harvest in 24 months.
