A Brief History of the Plaid Shirt: From Claire Danes to Rosie

By A Mystery Man Writer

Flannel shirts are one of those wardrobe staples we all take for granted. Like jeans, T-shirts, and sneakers, it seems everyone has at least one in their closet (and lately celebs are gaga over them). But if you don't have one now, we bet you definitely did (or will) at some point in your life. For better or worse, they are ubiquitous and pretty much trend-proof. But do you know about their illustrious history? For many of flannel shirts will always be quintessentially '90s. (Growing up during that decade, I adopted the grunge look full-on. While most of my Midwestern peers were wearing baggy pants and bright colors—they were really into TLC—I was tying my dad's red flannel around my waist and begging my mom to let me cut holes in my jeans.) Of course, Kurt Cobain, Eddie Vedder, and their hordes of angsty teenage fans weren't the first to wear flannels—and they obviously will not be the last. Today, checked button-downs are worn by everyone from Pharrell Williams to your mom, and they come in every style imaginable. They've transcended decades, genres, classes, genders, and generations—and will likely continue to do so for a long time. But how did
